Free replacement stiles on Footpaths
Landowner Opportunity: FREE GATES to replace stiles on Footpaths
Horam Parish Council (HPC), in collaboration with the East Sussex County Council’s Rights of Way Team, are working to improve access to our parish by removing barriers on public footpaths. Support is available to improve accessibility by replacing old or damaged stiles with pedestrian gates, making countryside paths accessible to all.
- Do you own land in Horam Parish?
- Do you have public rights of way on your land?
- Do you have stiles on these rights of way?
- Are you interested in improving accessibility?
If you are located in the High Weald National Landscape (HWNL) area, the County Council’s Rights of Way team can currently supply and deliver FREE, galvanized metal pedestrian gates to replace existing stiles.
For landowners whose stiles are located on public rights of way within Horam Parish but beyond the boundaries of the High Weald AONB, HPC are offering to fund and deliver a galvanised metal pedestrian gate, provided you are willing to undertake its installation.
As the landowner, all you need to do is:
- Sign a simple (one page) agreement with the Rights of Way Team/HPC
- Undertake correct installation of the gate following the instructions provided
- Keep it well maintained.
This is a great opportunity to make rights of way on your land more accessible for people who find stiles difficult to use. Gates also have a reduced maintenance liability compared to a stile. Removing stiles will enhance people’s ability to access and enjoy the beautiful, farmed landscape.
